Artists in Residence

  • Banha da Cobra

Banha da Cobra is a research and sound intervention project formed by Mestre André and Carlos Godinho. Their area of investigation includes field recordings that explore the electroacoustics of specific places in cities but also outside of them. The field recordings primarily consist of the sounds produced by the elements present in these places and, secondarily, the resonances of the percussion instruments played there. The imagery of the project explores the idealization of soundscapes that touch upon the qualities of the ritual, the artisanal and the traditional. These characteristics are materialized in Carlos Godinho's instruments: a diverse set of percussions and woodwinds including shells, rattles, horns, flutes and small bongos.

Fernando Roussado studied sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon, where he teaches now. In recent years he has dedicated himself to research and is about to conclude a doctorate in sculpture, where he reflects on the importance of carving in sculptural thinking, both in theory and in practice. His interest stems directly from the employment of the material as a possibility of relating to the world, exploring specifically the latent tension between will and power; the power of the matter; the care implied by practical intention; the importance of time in the production of a work of art.

  • Maja Escher

Maja Escher's artistic practice has a collective and hybrid dimension in which drawings, found objects, collaborative practices and fieldwork methods are part of the process to develop site-specific installations and research projects. Establishing a relationship with places and people is essential to her work process. Her projects often arise from a moment of sharing, a conversation, a song or an object found or offered. Her growing concern with water scarcity and the subsequent risk of desertification, led the artist to focus her research on water and rain, seeking to connect popular wisdom – stories, popular sayings and riddles – and scientific data.
